Bequia is the largest island of the Grenadian in the Caribbean. It belongs to the State of Saint-Vincent and the Grenadines
At the end of the 16th century, the Indians are combined with the fugitive slaves (the “black Caribbean”) to push back the English and French colonists successfully.
But at the beginning of the 18th century, the French put the hand on the island of Saint-Vincent near and are established in 1719 on Bequia for the culture of the Coton, the Indigotier, the Canne to sugar and the production of lime.
In 1763, the treated of Paris puts an end to seven years of war between French and English and in spite of a short French interlude in 1779, Bequia passes to the British hands. Colonists English, Irish, Scottish, Portuguese, Asian arrive then on the island and are added to the French already present.
In 1828, date of the peak of production of sugar in the the Antilles, Bequia counts nine plantations of sugar, a church and 1 400 inhabitants (of which 1 200 slaves). After the departure of the rich person growers, the poorest inhabitants reconverted themselves into the fishing with the Baleine. Bequia builds then a fleet of Baleinier S and exports the oil and the meat of whale. On the 153 boats built between 1923 and 1990 with Saint-Vincent-and them Grenadian, 71 are it in Bequia.
After the Second world war, Bequia will turn to the Tourisme thanks to its sand beaches white, its coral reefs and its tropical forest.
It is an island stretched in the North-eastern direction - South-west which comprises some courses and bays of which one of it (Admiralty Bay) shelters the chief town and single village of the île : Port-Elizabeth. The North of the island less is urbanized, more escarpé and shelters a marine sanctuary dedicated to the tortoises. In the South of Bequia the small islands of Petite Nevis, Isle with Four and Island Pigeon are. The airport of the island is in the extreme South, not far from the museum of the whale.
The island benefits from a tropical Climat but can undergo the passage of the Cyclone S.
Bequia is located at 13°00' Northern Latitude and 60°15' of Longitude Western.
