Beočin

Beočin , in Serb Cyrillic Sr Беочин, is a city and a municipality of Serbia located in the autonomous province of Voïvodine. They belong to the district of Bačka Southerner. In 2002, the city counted: 8058 inhabitants and the municipality of which it is the center: 16086, of which a majority of Serb.

Although integrated in the district of Bačka Southerner, Beočin belongs to the area of the Syrmie.

History

In local dialect, the name of the city derives from a word meaning the " father blanc" , in reference to the Monastery of close Beočin.

Beočin is mentioned for the first time in 1702. The city experienced a fast development when there intalla a cement factory which is one of largest of Europe.
