Bent Larsen (Tilsted, May 4th, 1935 -) is a player of failures Danish.

One considers Larsen as the player of failures most extremely who ever was born in Denmark. It passes professional in 1956. It takes part in the interzonal Tournoi of Portoroz in 1958 (where it undergoes a defeat against the young person Bobby Fischer in a Sicilienne memorable dragon). It gains the interzonal Tournoi with three recoveries (with Amsterdam in 1964, Sousse (Tunisia) in 1967, and with Bienne (Swiss) in 1976). It became international Maître at 19 years in 1954. Two years later, it obtains the title of international Large-Master.

Larsen was more at ease in tournament than in match, the matches of the candidates for the world title hardly succeeded to him. With the Tournament of the candidates of 1965, it loses the semi-final against Mikhaïl Tal, former world champion. In 1968, it loses the semi-final against Boris Spassky, which gained the title. Lastly, in 1971, it undergoes a rout in the semi-final by losing 0-6 against Bobby Fischer, which gained the title the following year.

In 1988, it loses a part against Deep Thought (computer of failures) at the time of the Software Toolworks Championship , becoming the first large-Master to wipe a defeat against a computer in a tournament.

Larsen continues to play in an occasional way. In 1999, it finishes 7th on 10 with the championship of Denmark; it was 4th with the Nadjorf Memorial with Buenos Aires in 2002.

In January 2004, its Classement Elo is still of: 2461.

Larsen is a player equipped with a great imagination, testing many ideas considered to be not very orthodoxe. One can also remember his not very usual openings. He is one of the very rare large-Masters to have employed the Ouverture Bird (1. f4) rather regularly or the attacks Nimzo-Larsen (1. b3), named thus in its honor and that of Aaron Nimzowitsch. Its style is marked by savage attacks, playing exclusivemet for the profit instead of seeking the null quiet ones, which sometimes was worth some disillusions to him.

He lives today in Argentine.

Although Larsen has a negative total against Bobby Fischer, it twice beat it with the Blacks. Here one of its victories with Santa Monica in 1966:
