Benoit VI , wire of a Romain named Hildebrand, was elected on September 22nd 972, two weeks after the death of Jean XIII, by the party favorable to the emperor. It was however necessary to await the agreement of this one for the sacring, on January 19th 973. The death of Otton Ier in May deprived it of its guard and it was interned with the Château Saint-Angel by the Antipape Boniface VII, following its capture by Crescent and it died strangled in June 974. He will be pope for 17 months before being buried in the old Saint-Pierre basilica.
