Benjamin Jaurès

Benjamin Jaurès (registry office: Constant Louis Jean Benjamin Jaurès) was a French naval officer, born the February 3rd 1823 with Albi, dead the March 13rd 1889 with Paris, brother of the admiral Charles Jaurès and uncle of Jean Jaurès.
Biography
It enters the Navy in 1839. Named aspiring while leaving the Naval college of Brest on September 1st 1841, it embarks on the Triumphing , at the station of the Pacific; in 1842, it takes part in the operations with Tahiti and the Marquises, on board Queen-White .Teach vessel on November 1st 1845, Lieutenant the May 8th 1850, aide-de-camp of the admiral Charner on the of Guesclin in 1853. It orders the Aviso Ariel and the station of Granville in 1856 and 1857.
It took share with the Crimean War (in particular with the Siège of Sébastopol), with the forwardings of China, Cochinchine. Again aide-de-camp of the admiral Charner, ordering the Division of the China Seas, on board the Empress Eugenie , it is noticed at the time of the operations of unloading to the mouth of the Bai He (August and September 1860) and, in Cochinchine, to the attack of the lines of Kin-Hoa and the catch of the forts of the river of Saigon in February 1861.
He is promoted commander the August 26th 1861. At January 1st 1869, it is named officer of the Légion of honor. Captain the May 22nd 1869; in May 1870, it orders the armoured frigate Héroïne , as captain of house of Jauréguiberry.
When occurred, in 1870, the war with Prussia, Jaurès was destined for a command in the squadron of the the North Sea; but maritime forwarding that one projected not having taken place, it was charged to strengthen Carentan. It must unload in September 1870, because it is called by Leon Gambetta, and is named major general of the 21e Army corps of Ground, where it was illustrated.
A little later Gambetta, then Minister for the war, called it with the army of the Loire with the Brigadier general rank of , under the orders of Jauréguiberry, admiral named, him, Major general on a purely auxiliary basis. Put at the head of the 21e body on November 20th, 1870, it acted with as much intrepidity than of coolness, in particular with the combat of Mamers, Marchenoir, Vendôme, Bonnétable, Bridge-of-Genoa, Sillé-the-Guillaume and in the retirement of the army until Laval. It was then named Major general on a purely auxiliary basis the January 16th 1871. After the signature of peace, it deposited its command and accepted, the October 16th 1871, the rank of Rear-admiral, in reward of its brilliances services during the war.
Named in the Tarn, at the time of the elections complementary to the July 2nd 1871, appointed to the National Assembly, Jaurès, which belonged to the opinion republican E moderated, went to sit at the center left, which it joined to support its votes the policy of Thiers. He became senator in 1876, Commandeur of the Légion of honor the September 5th 1877, Vice-amiral the October 31st 1878, Ambassadeur of France with Madrid of December 1878 at February 1882, then with Saint-Pétersbourg until in 1883.
From November 1883 with 1884, it orders as a chief the squadron of evolutions on the Richelieu . It was decorated with the Grand Cross of the Légion of honor the January 14th 1887. The February 22nd 1889, it was named Minister for the navy in the Gouvernement Pierre Tirard and died in this station suddenly less than one month afterwards, the March 13rd 1889.
It was buried with Graulhet, its statue is on the place of the Jordan of this city.
