Benfeld
Benfeld is a common French, located in the department of the the Low-Rhine and the area Alsace. It constitutes one of the poles of employment between Sélestat and Strasbourg, located more at north.
Geography
History
Benfeld is located near the antique Gallo-Roman city of Ellelum or Helvetum (Ehl) destroyed by the Vandales in January 407. One re-used the stones of them to build the village. It is of Ehl that, one says Saint Materne will évangélisera Alsace with the 5ère century.
A first rampart is built in XIVe century.
During the War of Thirty Years, Benfeld defended by its inhabitants and Louis Zorn von Bulach, resists during 66 days the seat established by the Swedish. After the rendering of the city, the Swedes occupied Benfeld of November 9th, 1632, until 1650 and destroyed the fortifications.

Places and monuments
The town hall goes back to 1531; the side tower with its automat clock was added in 1619.
The church the St. Lawrence east one of the oldest episcopal churches attested (762); sarcophagi mérovingiens dating from the primitive church were discovered under the foundations of the current church. The church was altered in 1754, the Gothic chorus was preserved and the nave rebuilt in 1840 in neo-classic style. The church amongst other things shelters baptismal font of the end of XVe century coming from the convent of Ehl.

Socomec, specialized company in the inverters and electrical equipment boxes have its head office and a factory with Benfeld
The laboratories of PCB Création are specialized in the food decorations.
SECOME SAS conceives and carries out means of productions for the transformation of sheet metal; ADEcut its company sister implements these means (press tool) by producing metal parts.
Personalities related to the commune

François-Xavier Gsell born in Benfeld on October 30th, 1872 and deceased with Sydney on July 12th, 1960. Missionary of the Sacred Heart in Australia, it was, in 1938, the first bishop of Darwin.
