The succession of several episodes of sedimentation and incision frequently leads to the staging of several terraces.

The rythmicity between deposit of sediments and incision can be guided by a modification of the basic Level, a change of the hydrodynamic Régime of the river, with the sedimentary load or one of the movements Tectonique S. the dating of these terraces (by Paléontologie, cosmogenic isotopes, Dendrochronologie etc) makes it possible to study the geological and geomorphological history Bassin pouring river. Such datings are also used in Archéologie to recall the history of a prehistoric settlement.
