Belzébuth
Belzébuth was a Philistine divinity honoured in the town of Eqrön, known primarily by a mention in the Second book of Kings I.2, where king Ahzariah of Israel is cursed by the prophet Élie to have requested his oracle instead of addressing itself to Yahweh. On the faith of this passage, theologists and mystical Chrétien S first of all identified it with Satan, then sometimes with the one of its “lieutenants”. The first Christian text to give him this role is the Évangile of Marc III.22 where Béelzéboul is chief of the demons.
There exist several alternative orthographies, though less frequent, like Baal-sébub , Baal-zébub , Baalzébuth Béelzébub , Béelzébuth , Belzéboul , Belzébul , Belzébut , etc (alphabetically)
God of the Middle East
Baal, common name for the gods in the worlds Philistine and Phénicien, means “main” or “owner”. Various assumptions exist as for the significance of the second part of the name: Zebûb or Zoubeb , form noted in the Bible, means “flying”, which gave to place to pejorative interpretation “Lord of the flies”, but it could mean “Lord of what flies”. In the same spirit, it was proposed that it would be about the corruption of Zabal , “refuse”; “Lord of refuse” would be then an insulting name given by the Israélites to an enemy god. Others, like Thomas K. Cheyne, see there Zeboul , “raised” or “prince”; Baal Zeboul would then mean “Main Princes” or “Owner of the high residence”. A last possible assumption is that Zebûl would be a place name disappeared since.
Prince of the Christian infernal reign
The opinions diverge somewhat concerning the exact place from Belzébuth in the infernal order. For the Evangelists (Matthieu XII, 24; Luc XI, 15; Marc III, 22), he is the Prince of the demons and the supreme leader of the infernal empire. This concept is taken again by Sainte Francoise in her revelations, reported in its Traité on the Hell : Belzébuth belonged before its rebellion against God to the chorus of the Dominations; since it established its capacity on all the crimes which the idolatry gives birth to, and governs infernal darkness. For others, he is a under-prince, emperor of the 6.666 infernal legions. For John Milton, it is first in being able and crime after Satan., Belzébuth belongs to the first hierarchy of the bad Ange S and was formerly called in the country of Canaan “Lord of the refuse” or “Lord of the flies”. It indeed drove out these last of the harvests which they infested, and its temple was some completely released. He is the founder of a “Order of the flies” comprising several ranks, with which he honors his dirtiest creatures, cheappest and most contemptible. One is unaware of the aspect however that it takes in front of its admirers. Some compare it with an enormous fly, others confuse it with Priape or Bacchus.
