Belgrade Arena
Belgrade Arena (Serb Cyrillic: Serb Београдскаарена , Latin: Beogradska arena ) is a general sports room located in the " Block 25" of Novi Beograd, a urban district of Belgrade, in Serbia. It is largest and modern complexes sportsman with Belgrade, and it is conceived for all the events, including the Basket-ball, the Handball, the Volley-ball, the Tennis, the Athlétisme, for cultural events and other programs. Its capacity varies between 20.000 and 23.000 places according to the event, it is among largest and the most modern sports halls in Europe.
History
The Belgrade Arena was officially inaugurated the July 31st 2004. Its cost of construction is estimated at €70 million Euro.In 1989, the town of Belgrade was selected to accommodate the Championnat of the world of tennis shoe masculine 1994. However, there was a condition for the city, it had builds a new modern arena of Basket-ball. The government of city immediately launched a competition to find the best design of the new arena which was supposed to have a capacity of 20.000 places. The architect Vlada Slavica of Belgrade had presented the best design.
In 1991 a site for the project was chosen, the " Block 25" with Novi Beograd. However the project became already problematic. Only 3 years ago before the Championnat of the world of tennis shoe masculine 1994 to build this megastructure which was to be made in a time record. A team of 126 companies was trained to belong to the committee of the arena. Two architects were selected to design the roof of the arena.
It is in 1992 that construction started and the committee of the arena formed an association with the American company HOK Sport which has much experiment in the construction of the sporting arenas. While the conflicts and the separation of the Yugoslavia started, the United Nations had imposed sanctions on the Serbia and HOK Sport stopped any co-operation with the committee of the arena. Even with this deceleration, the building site on the Belgrade Arena continued.
In 1993, the Serbia passed by one of its blackest years in the modern history. The country fell into rates of inflation record, and because of the sanctions and the conflicts in Yugoslavia, Belgrade lost the right to accommodate the Championnat of the world of tennis shoe masculine 1994.
The construction of the arena continued, however it became slower because there was a lack of material and finally in 1995 construction was completely stopped. The building site taken again in 1998 because the city was selected to accommodate the championship of the world of table tennis in 1999. At that time the roof took already form, part of the frontage was made and the interior was with half complete. Again, the Serbia lost the privilege to accommodate the competition whereas the city was bombarded by the forces of NATO in 1999.
After the change of government in Serbia in 2000 and the fall of all the sanctions imposed on the country, the arena, under a new management was accomplished in 2004 for Diamond ball tournament and Belgrade finally obtained the right to accommodate the Championnat of Europe of basketball 2005.
The provisional license for the public use expired beginning 2006, according to a series of sports events and concerts in 2005. Work on the protective system against the automated fire and the installation of the elevators to answer European standards was completed for November 2006, whereas no event was held in the arena while waiting. Belgrade Arena received its permanent public license of use the November 4th 2006.
It will accommodate the Concours Eurovision of the song 2008.
