Belgian cartoon

The Cartoon is regarded as a Art with whole share in Belgium, which is very proud of its production. A great number of French-speaking cartoons are of Belgian origin, from where the Franco-Belgian expression Cartoon.

The cartoon

The Belgian cartoon really started in 1929 with Hergé (inventive of the " clear Line ") who made travel his young person to defer named Tintin to the four corners of the world (and even on the moon!).

Followed: Spirou (1938), Lucky Luke (1947), Gaston Lagaffe (1957), Schtroumpfs (1958), Ball and Bill, Luc the East, Achilles Talon, Blake and Mortimer, Buck Danny, daN Cooper, Bob and Bobette, Hair and Tondu, Modeste and Pompon, Bob Morane, Chick Bill, Ric Hochet, Corentin, Alix, Ulna, Natacha, Yoko Tsuno, Gil Jourdan, Bernard Prince, Comanche, Olivier Branch, the Cat, blue Tunics, Jeremiah, XIII, Largo Winch, Gord, Fox, Albert Lombaire

In all, the Belgium account for the moment more than 650 authors of Cartoon " greatest concentration in the world of hero of paper to the kilometer carré" have fun to say some.

Walloon cartoon

After the second world war, the Walloon cartoon is marked by the prevalence of newspapers intended for youth, like the Newspaper of Tintin and the Newspaper of Spirou, which give rise to the school known as of Franco-Belgian cartoon. ette data base was seen offering the possibilities of the French market, it was led to francize, i.e. not to be expressed in French, which it made already, but to give up the Belgian referents: the various publishers Walloon and of Brussels impose to the authors as of the Fifties a French standard for trade names (...) the uniforms and the control panels adopt hexagonal criteria… Of the recurring references to the landscapes and imaginary the Walloons is however notable in authors as different as Comès or Peyo (decorations of Johan and Pirlouit). There are also the landscapes which appear to some extent by chance like the Saint-Aubin cathedral of Namur, the spoken languages at certain exotic tribes of the Natacha of François Walthéry (often of the Wallon or Picard, one finds also the same process at Hergé), the boats tourists along the Meuse with Dining, etc

Flemish cartoon

Not very known in French-speaking territory, the Flemish cartoon introduces a rich person tradition and its popularity near the general public is remarkable in comparison with the size of the territory. The series " Jommeke " of Jef Nys sold 45 million albums in Flanders. Authors as Marc Sleen has are extremely popular in the world Néerlandophone without to have the same level of notoriety near the Walloon or French public. Bridges exist however between the Walloon data base and the Flemish data base: Willy Vandersteen, by integrating the team of the Newspaper of Tintin , made Bob and Bobette a success at the French-speaking public and Bob de Moor, author of a long time new series in Wallonia, in parallel was essential like a veteran of the Franco-Belgian cartoon .

The expansion of the Belgian Cartoon after 1945

From second half of the Years 1940, several newspapers are born. While launching the Newspaper of Tintin and the Editions of Lombard, the editor Raymond Leblanc gains a great leading success and contributes to make Belgium the center of gravity of the French-speaking cartoon. Another Belgian publication, Spirou, bring a serious competition to him. The Franco-Belgian term of Cartoon takes all her direction then, because of overlap of the professional universes of these two countries. At the great time of the Newspaper of Tintin, authors like Jacques Martin or Tibet come to work in Belgium and, although French, are associated with the Belgian cartoon.

Whereas the Walloon Cartoon reaches the French market in the years 1950, the authors of French-speaking Cartoon give up any too visible Belgian referent to propose with their reader stories more " universelles". The editors like Lombard, Dupuis and Casterman dominate the sector of the cartoon mainly.

Center Belgian of the cartoon

The Belgian Center of the cartoon is in a building " Art nouveau " who was drawn by Victor Horta. Historical cartoons (Tintin, Spirou, Lucky Luke) with new creations, all that deals with the cartoon in Belgium is there. The center shelters also the largest bédéthèque of the world as well as many temporary exhibitions.
