Belfry of Mons

The Beffroi of Mons is most recent of the belfries of Belgium and France. This belfry, classified since January 15th, 1936, concerns the major Patrimoine of Wallonia and is classified with the world heritage of UNESCO since December 1st, 1999. It is only country built in style baroque. Measuring 87 meters, it dominates the town of Mons, itself built over a hill.

History

It is Louis Ledoux which was the architect. He directed work of from there 1662 to his death which has occurred in 1667. Work was continued of 1667 with 1669 per Vincent Anthony.

This belfry is a construction of prestige which was also used for uses as firefighting or, during the Second world war, of point from where alarms against the bombardments started.

Characteristics

The belfry of Mons does not have all the characteristics of the belfries, like the fact of containing a prison, buildings sheltering Justice, etc, but the Hainaut, is not an area of belfries as characterized as more in north in Belgian Flanders or French Flanders.

Top of the building, one can observe the battle field of the Bataille of Mons, the Borinage, the plain of the Haine and the hills or pilot hillocks of the edges of this one, the cement factories and the spoil heaps of old the coal mining of the Raising of Mons to Bray.
