Belfries of Belgium and France
Fifty six Belfry S of Belgium and France are registered on the Liste of the world heritage of UNESCO.
This inheritance is composed of 32 belfries of Flanders and Wallonia registered in 1999, to which UNESCO added, in 2005, 23 belfries of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Picardy more that of Gembloux. This group from now on is named belfries of Belgium and France .
The criteria which determined their inscription are the following:
- the belfries of Belgium are exceptional examples of a form of urban architecture adapted to the political and spiritual requirements of their time;
-
the belfries of Belgium represent with the Moyen-âge the lately acquired independence of the cities and common vis-a-vis to the feudal mode .

Anecdote
It is to be noticed that there does not exist belfry in the south-east of Belgium. Indeed, in these territories under the Old Mode, the capacity was ecclesiastic (principality-évéché of Liege and abbey principality of Stavelot-Malmedy), and the symbol of communal freedoms was the perron rather than the Beffroi .
