Genesis and recording

For the writing of this song, John Lennon took as a starting point a poster of circus dating from the time victorienne (at the 19th century), which it had bought apperçue and in an antique dealer in the Kent, whereas it turned the video clip of Strawberry Fields Forever . On this poster gone back to 1843 figure near total of the words which will be used in the song. The characters to which the words make allusion, Mr. Kite, Pablo Fanques and Henderson, have thus all really existed. Only exception, the Zanthus horse of origin becomes Henry the Horse , for rhythmic conveniences, just as the place of the spectacle evoked in the song, which passes from Rochdale to Bishopsgate. It however changes opinion in the famous interview which it gives in 1980 to the magazine Playboy : This song is so pure, a little like a table; it is a true watercolour .

One will note also a small polemic around the song, as it was the case for many others on the album Sgt. Pepper' S , as for an allusion hidden to drug. Indeed, “ horse ” indicates the Héroïne in English slang. The character of “Henry the horse” was thus very indicated to cause at the time of his exit the prohibition of the song on the waves. An interpretation not frankly relevant….
