Beggars Banquet
Beggars Banquet is an album of the Rolling Stones. Left fine 1968, it is regarded by the critics as their first true masterpiece. After the first albums which contained many recoveries and psychedelic wanderings ( Their Satanic Majesties Request - 1967), Stones found their way and will mark the decade to come.
It is their first album produced by Jimmy Miller, association which will continue for most of the years 1970.
Brian Jones, drug addict and alcoholic, practically does not take part in the recording. Only the parts of guitar slide on No Expectations can be to him allotted. Keith Richards ensures to it quasi totality of the guitars of which much is acoustic in order to give a characteristic thickness to the sound. Among the guests who take part in the recording, one finds Nicky Hopkins with the piano, Eric Clapton with the guitar and probably Steve Winwood.
Beggars Banquet marks the return of the Rolling Stones to the sources of their musical inspiration. Never the Blues had not been also present, as pure as on this opus which gives the tone for the years to follow ( Let It Bleed , Sticky Fingers , Exile one Hand Street ). It is also the occasion for them to mark their opposition to the Beatles, at the same time on the political plan (the ragor Street Fighting Man makes echo with pacifist the Revolution of Fab Four) and on the philosophical level ( Sympathy for the Devil is one of the more good examples of provocation of Stones). The disc seems curiously with counter-current of the inspiration Hippie of the time and revival the popularity of the group.
Jean-Luc Godard films part of the recording of the album which will leave under the title Sympathy for the Devil or One more one .
Two different small pockets exist for the album. At the time of the exit of the disc, Decca, the recording company, insists for a white small pocket invitation card kind whereas Stones want a photograph of graffiti on walls of toilet. The dissension delays the exit of disc the two month old and it is finally the recording company which carries it. However at the time of the republication in CD, the photograph of toilets, remade its appearance.
