Begeč
Begeč , in Serb Cyrillic Бегеч and in Hungarian Begecs, is a locality of Serbia located in the autonomous province of Voïvodine. It belongs to the municipality of Novi Sad in the district of Bačka Southerner. In 2002, it counted: 3360 inhabitants, of which a majority of Serb.
Begeč is officially classified among the villages of Serbia.
History
Under the Roman Empire, in IIIe and IVe centuries, a fort called Castellum Onagrinum existed with the site of the current city.
Begeč is mentioned for the first time at the 16th century. Its name derives from the Othoman title " beg" or " bey " and of the word " eč" , which means the " village".
A Serb church orthotodoxe was built there in 1838.
Transport
By the line of bus 56, the village is connected to Futog, Veternik and Novi Sad. It is also on a line connecting Bač and Bačka Palanka to Novi Sad.
A ferry crossing the the Danube makes it possible to join Banoštor in Syrmie.
