Beetle of broad bean

The beetle of the broad bean is a small insect of the family of Chrysomélidés, order of the Coléoptère S, whose Larve S develop inside seeds of Fève S and Fèverole S making them inapt for consumption.

This species is close to the Bruche of the pea but is more strictly pledged with the Fève ( Vicia faba ).

Description

The beetle of broad bean is a small insect from 4 to 5 mm length.

Biology

The biological cycle of this species includes/understands only one annual generation.

The adults lay their eggs on the surface of the pods in spring (at the end of May - at the beginning of June in the moderate areas of the northern hemisphere).

As of their blossoming, the larvae penetrate in the pods then in the Graine S where they continue their development for three months. They perforate seeds before nymphoser. Generally the insects remain in seeds until next spring.

Damage

The adult insects living only a few days by nourishing pollen of the flowers, cause little damage.

On the other hand the presence of larvae in seeds, locatable with the circular opening visible at the surface of these last, makes them unsuitable to human consumption and involve their downgrading. According to the regulations in force, variable according to the countries, this downgrading intervenes beyond a threshold from 1,5 to 3% of grains beetles. The selling price of seeds drops then appreciably (for example from 140 to 90 €/t) involving an unquestionable damage for the producers.

Moreover the presence of grains beetles supports the infestation of the following cultures.

Means of fight

The fight against the beetle of broad bean calls primarily upon the Insecticide S, but those being effective only against the adult insects, it is necessary to treat the cultures, in one or more passages, as soon as the pods start to be formed. These insects being very mobile, it is necessary simultaneously to treat all the pieces in a given area.
