Beer Trappist

A Bière Trappist is a beer brewed by or under control of the monks Trappists. These beers are generally of high fermentation and must be brewed in the respect of the criteria defined by International Association Trappist if they want to be able to raise the logo Authentic trappist product delivered by this private Association.

Criteria of name

The criteria to obtain name Authentic trappist product are the following:

  • the product must be manufactured within a Trappist abbey;
  • the product must be manufactured by, or under, the control of the monks;
  • the main part of the benefit must be devoted to works in social matter.

Certain beers of inspiration Trappist, but which do not answer these criteria, were marketed with this mention until in 1962, date of a judgment of the Tribunal of Ghent which condemned the Brasserie of Veltem for the abusive use of the mark Veltem Trappist . Today, the beers of the Trappist type are rather described as Bière of abbey.

The beers Trappists

There exist only seven beers Trappists in the world, which raise all the logo Hexagonal Authentic trappist product present on the label. Six are Belgian S (three are brewed in Flemish Région and three in Walloon region) and is Dutchwoman.
  • In Flemish area:

    • the Westmalle, brewed with the Abbey of Westmalle, with Trunk in the Province of Antwerp, is declined in two contents of alcohol: 9,5% for the triple (fair gilded), 7% for the double (brown).
    • the Westvleteren, brewed with the Abbey of Saint-Sixth, Vleteren in Flanders-Western. It exists in three types: the fair (7,8%), the ambrée (8%) and the brown (10,2%). Westvleteren is a very rare beer because the monks of the abbey decided not to increase the production of beer in spite of its success. Thus, to get some it is necessary to go to the abbey the day out of beer, even if some specialized stores sell some without authorization.
    • the Achel, brewed with the Monastery of Notre-Dame de Saint-Benoît, with Achel (Province of Limbourg). The brewery produces two beers in pressure, a blonde (5%) and brown (5%), and beers bottles, triple (8%) and brown (8%) as well as brown the stronger (9%) brewed occasionally.
