Beech local train
The beech local train is a type of Arbre curious and characteristic. It is about a natural variety of the common Hêtre low height, with the trunk tortuous and the branches and branches twisted and falling down, which give them a particular port like a parasol. Their growth is very slow.
It is called also a fau, the word “fau” indicating the beech in Former French (plural: forgery, diminutive: fayet); he derives from the Latin fagus , while the term “beech” is of Germanic origin).
Its scientific name is Fagus sylvatica L. VAr. tortuosa Pepin (of the name of the botanist which described it in 1861).
It is a rare variety, probably appeared following a change, that one finds in very great number in wood of Verzy, close to Rheims (department of the Marne, France). The False of Verzy, are a tourist attraction of the Montagne de Reims, known since the 6th century, but there are also some in the Moselle (forest of Rémilly) like in Brittany, and elsewhere in Europe, in particular in Germany and Scandinavia (Denmark). Very recently, a relatively important population (a hundred individuals) was discovered in Auvergne, in the Chain of Puys. (http://tortillard.free.fr).
Certain specimens of these beeches would have nearly 1000 years.
One can also see some in many botanical gardens, certain public parks, and in certain horticulturists who propose them with the sale.
It should be noted that there exist varieties of trees “local trains” in other species: Oak, Hazel tree, Elm, Willow…
