Beaumes-of-Venice is a common French, located in the department of Vaucluse and the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure.

Beaumes-of-Venice is also named, in Occitan Provençal: Baumas de Venisa according to the traditional standard or Baumo de Veniso according to the Standard mistralienne)

Geography

The village is located at the foot of the Dentelles of Montmirail

Access

The secondary road 7 master key in the west of the Borough and connects this one by the secondary road 81.

The secondary road 90 coming from the south, crosses the borough and leaves to the North-East in direction the commune of Suzette.

At the south-east of the commune, the secondary roads 21 and 222 also arrive at the borough.

Relief and geology

The Dentelles of Montmirail are an assembly line of the Massif of Baronnies. Rock flagstones of the Jurassic (tithonic), grounds limestones.

Hydrography

Source of salt water to the district Make-Salted, Thermal spring of Montmirail, Durban; sulfur spring of Lafare; beautiful cascade of Saint-Christophe.

The Channel of Beaumes. (A legend tells that at the time one day of great cold, somebody the courageous one and of a little insane went down there to check the solidity of the ice. Unhappy VI to crumble under its feet.)

History

The caves were inhabited as of the Neolithic era. vestiges of Gallo-Roman occupation.

First mention in 993: " AD Balmas" who comes from " balma" : cave.

Stronghold of the count de Toulouse, Raymond Vl, given to the Holy See in 1209.

The stronghold became the second baronnie of Comtat after Sérignan: seigniory of Agoult with the XIIIe, of Clermont-Lodève with 14th, Astorg de Peyre and, finally, of Fortia until the Revolution; set up in fine duchy XVIIIe by Magpie VI.

1572, the city is taken by the baron of the Adrets.

Until 1914, a hydropathic establishment existed with the district of Make-Salted.

Economy

The agriculture, whose wine production, is the most important point of the local economy: Olive-trees (co-operatives olive-growing), vine, apples, cherries, olive oil, honey.

The vine is present on the slopes of Laces of Montmirail, several cellars/fields (production in AOC " coast-of-Rhône" , " coast-of-Ventoux" , and muscatel " Beaumes-of-Venise") on the commune.

Tourism, and in particular wine tourism (wine trail), have also a big part in the local economy.

There exists thus an inter-commune tourist office (between Beaumes-of-Venice, Lafare, Suzette, Alric Castling and Saint Hippolyte) and a tourist office, camp-site, lodgings rural, etc

The local arts and crafts is mainly turned towards building (masons, plasterers, etc)
