Beaucamps-Ligny

Beaucamps-Ligny is a common French, located in the department of the Northern (59) and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais.

Its inhabitants is called Beaucampois.

History

A legend wants that in 1164 Thomas Becket, archbishop of Canterbury, stopped in Beaucamps in its escape of King d' Angleterre. The legend is tough then that a relic of the cup in which he would have drunk is preserved. The historians formally contradict his passage in the commune whereas it left to take refuge in Pontigny

With the revolution the family of Flandres is lord of Radinghem and Beaucamps

In 1832, the Countess of Grandville (beautiful girl by alliance of the family of Flandres) made come the Sisters from the Child-Jesus to look after an cholera epidemic; in 1842 it makes come the Marist brothers to found a school. The two schools amalgamated in 1976 to give rise to the Institution co. Marie which accommodates in 2007 more than 2.750 pupils

In 1914 the village is just behind of the frontline. Occupied by German, educational establishment is used as hospital. Before leaving the village in 1918, the Germans dynamited all the village. Ligny had nothing any more but 36 inhabitants then.

Rene DELESALLE, Mayor of Ligny-in-Weppes, proposed at the village of Beaucamps to amalgamate the two communes. In 1928: Beaucamps-Ligny was born.
