Beaker
A beaker is a cylindrical container flat-bottomed, at the edge high slightly widened and provided with a spout. It is also called vase of Berlin or Berlin (in Belgium especially). This container is used in the laboratories of Chimie, Physique, Biologie, Pharmacie…
Constitution
It is generally in Verre (often Pyrex) or in Plastic (often Polypropylène), but to contain very corrosive solutions, Acide S for example, one finds also beakers in Téflon and other materials resisting the Corrosion. There exist very diverse beakers of capacity, of 1 ml to several liters, generally graduated.
Use
The beaker is probably the element of glassmaking more used in Laboratoire: preparation of solution S, heating, Titration…The presence of the spout makes that the beaker is not intended to be closed hermetically to preserve solutions, but one uses sometimes a Watch glass or a plastic film to limit evaporation and the contaminations.
Like their cousins, the erlenmeyers, they are generally graduated to roughly indicate the volume of liquid which they contain, however these containers should not be used to measure a volume: one will use for this purpose a Pipette, a Burette, a measured Fiole or a test-tube graduated according to volume to measure and the precision necessary.
