Bazooka is the nickname of a weapon of the type Lance-roquettes used during the Second world war.
By extension, this word usually indicates any portable rocket launcher by only one man.
It is one of the first weapons anti tank intended to be used by a Fantassin. The gun S anti tank of the time required being used and a means as towing.
Built by army U.S., it was quickly copied by the German army which produced the Panzerschreck, a weapon of larger gauge of a range and a power higher than those of the bazooka. The reduced weight and the low costs of production of the bazooka made it possible however to massively equip the allied troops with them.
Its influence on the battle fields was such as the General Dwight D. Eisenhower counted it among the weapons which made it possible to gain the victory at the sides of the Atomic bomb, the Jeep and the transport aircraft Douglas C-47 Skytrain.
At the beginning of the war of Korea, a more powerful version of a gauge of 89mm, corresponding to that of Panzerschreck, made its appearance under the name of Superbazooka .
Design
If the American army lays out, after the First World War, with very many powerful anti-tank guns, it is not equipped yet with a weapon portable anti-tank device by only one man. Research tasks, with the first prototypes worked out starting from a tube of mortar of 60 millimetres, are carried out under the orders of colonel Leslie Skinner. The ammunition in itself is equipped with a Hollow-charge, the rocket propelling it is fired electrically.
At the beginning of 1942, the final model is at the point and, in May of the same year, 5000 specimens are manufactured.
The effectiveness of the bazooka was limited and allowed very with difficulty the destruction of the German tanks most powerful like the Panther or the Tiger for which it was necessary to manage to touch a weak point.
