The bay of San Francisco is located at the west of the the United States on the coast Pacifique, in California. It is a not very deep Estuaire in which emerge of water draining 40% of California roughly, coming in particular from the rivers Sacramento and San Joaquin fascinating source in the chain Sierra Nevada before throwing in the Pacific Ocean. More precisely, these two rivers emerge in the Suisun bay, which gives on the strait of Carquinez to join Napa River at the entry of Bay of San Pablo, which itself is connected to the south with Bay of San Francisco, but the whole of these bays is in general indicated like “Bay of San Francisco”.

Surface

It is estimated that the bay covers a surface located between 1040 and 4160 km ², the number depend on inclusion, or not, of under-bays, the estuaries, the marshes and other units which border it. The principal part of bay measures from 5 to 20 km broad of the east in the west and between 77 and 97 km of north in the south. The principal difficulty which prevents from obtaining precise measurements is that the marshes and certain small islands of bay were embanked with the wire of time to allow their installation.
