History
The Européens probably explored bay for the first time at the 16th century. Its circumference is then inhabited by two Amerindian groups of : the Narragansett S in the west, and the Wampanoag S in the east and whose territories of life went until the Cape Cod.The majority of the historians consider that the first contact with Europeans took place in 1524 with the entry in bay of the ship Dauphine the , ordered by Giovanni da Verrazano, after having visited the Baie of New York. Verrazano baptizes the bay “Refugio” (the refuge). On the other hand, the debate historiographic continues on the exact circuit of Dauphine the - the bay having several entries - and which tribe, it could meet in first.
In 1614, the bay is explored and charted by the Dutch Adriaen Block; an island was baptized with its name, island Block.
The first European installation is dated from the Années 1630. Roger Williams was a dissatisfied member of the Colonie of Plymouth and settled in bay in 1635. It founded contacts with the Narragansett S and establishes a commercial counter on the west coast of bay. Approximately a score of kilometers in south-west, the Netherlanders had just installed their counter under the authority of the colony of New Amsterdam in the Baie of New York.
In 1643, Williams travelled in England and accepted a Charte for the new colony of Rhode Island. He also wrote a language dictionary narragansett, Keys to the Indian Language (“key of the Indian language”), which was published in England in 1643.
