Bay of Bengal

The Bay of Bengal is a Mer which forms the part of the North-East of the Indian Ocean. It with the shape of a triangle framed in the east by the Indochinese Peninsula, and in the west by the Indian Sub-continent. In the north of the gulf, one finds the state Indian Western Bengal and the Bangladesh, from which its name comes. At his southernmost ends, one finds the island of Sri Lanka in the west, and the Indian territory of the islands Andaman and Nicobar in the east.

Most of the principal rivers of the India are thrown in the Bay of Bengal: in north, the Gange (or Ganga), the Meghna and the Brahmapoutra, and in the south the Mahanadi, the Godâvarî, the Krishna and the Kâverî (or Kaviri).

The Sundarbans are a forest of mangroves which occupies the delta of Gange, Brahmapoutra and Meghna. The Irrawaddy, river of Burma is also thrown in bay of Bengal.

The Indian main ports on the gulf are Chennai (old Madras), Vishakhapatnam, Calcutta and Pondichéry.
