Bay of Babitonga

The bay of Babitonga is a bay Littoral Brésil IEN of the State of Santa Catarina. It is located at the mouth channel C Palmital, between two important cities: Joinville and São Francisco C Sul (on the island of São Francisco).

The Bay of Babitonga was already occupied there is more: 3000 years by fishing hunters/, the man of the Sambaqui. At the 15th century and 16th century, the bay is occupied by a group of Tupi-guarani, the Carijós, which disappeared at the 17th century like indigenous culture because of slavery, the wars and the diseases.

On northern bank of bay, one finds the locality of Saí (in the past “Sahí”) which, in 1842, was the theater of a social experiment pionnière - the phalanstery of Sahí - organized by Dr. Benoit Jules Mure. This last took as a starting point the ideas of Charles Fourier and settled in these places with colonists French.

Around bay, and especially on northern bank, one still finds the important wide ones of Atlantic Forêt. Luxuriant vegetation of the area in fact a very appreciated dedestination of the tourists.

A ferry makes the connection between the town of Joinville and northern bank of bay.

The bay of Babitonga (of which the name means Chauve-souris in indigenous language) presents a whole of 24 islands presented below:

The “vapor of Babitonga”, first maritime means of transport of passenger and freight between São Francisco C Sul and Joinville, entered in service in 1878.
