Bay of Audierne (Brittany)

See also: Audierne (homonymy)

The bay of Audierne corresponds to the portion of the littoral of the Finistere delimited in north by the Pointe of the Strong current and in the south by that of Penmarc' H.

With the difference of the Roads of Brest and Baie of Douarnenez which are water levels very protected from the winds, suitable to accommodate ships of strong tonnage, the bay of Audierne is inhospitable, and does not count ports of some importance, except for those of Audierne and Poulgoazec, on banks of the estuary of the Goyen. In the south of Audierne one counts only two tiny harbors, those of Pors-Poulhan and Penhors. Holy Guénolé in Penmarc' H, located at the extreme south of bay, is attached to the complex of the ports bigoudens (Holy Guénolé, Kérity, Guilvinec, Lesconil, Loctudy).

Between Audierne and the Point of the Strong current, one can mention the tiny ports of Loc' H in Primelin and that of Bestrée in Plogoff. The sea link with the island of Center is done starting from Saint Evette, in Esquibien.

The communes of bay are, of north in the south: Plogoff, Primelin, Esquibien, Audierne, Plouhinec, Plozévet, Pouldreuzic, Plovan, Tréogat, Tréguennec, Holy Jean-Trolimon, Plomeur, and Penmarc' H.

From the physical point of view, once passed the rock coast of Penmarc' H and the Pointe of the Torch what characterizes bay of Audierne until Plozévet, it is a low coast bordered of a furrow of rollers with a back country of Dune S and of pond S. nature is overall well preserved there. De Plozévet with Plouhinec, the beaches and the cliffs alternate. After Audierne, the height of cliffs rises gradually, to arrive at the remarkable point of the Strong current, which the reefs of the roadway of Center prolong.

From the human point of view, the part of bay in the south of Pors Poulhan belongs to the Pays Bigouden, and that located at north, the Cape Sizun, the difference being perceptible in the traditional caps and costumes, which determined a strong feeling of membership of one or the other of these communities. Moreover a statue of bigoudenne, cut by the sculptor Rene Quillivic was set up on southern bank of Pors Poulhan, and on his base one can read in French and Breton, that “here the country bigouden is completed”.

There was in the past of bay the famous shipwrecks of Audierne, of which, under the Revolution, that of the vessel '' the Human rights '', vis-a-vis the beach of Laid in Plozévet, where a engraved menhir of one inscription to the memory of the hundreds of victims is drawn up which were buried summarily in the dune.

It does not do without year without it not being question of strandings of dolphins, porpoises, or even of whales about the coasts of bay, which in addition know in certain sectors an erosion resulting in a marked retreat of the offshore bar; it is the case particularly with respect to Tréguennec where concrete works built by German in 1943-1944 with the shelter of the dunes are currently found in the middle of the beach.
