Bauru

Bauru is a municipality Brésil ienne located in the State of São Paulo.
Founded in 1896, it has uma altitude of 526 m, a surface of 673,5 km ², with 350.492 inhabitants.

It is a great university center where is in particular a campus of the Université of São Paulo.

History

After 1850, the pioneers of São Paulo and Minas Gerais started to explore the area ranging between the Serra of Botucatu, the Rio Tietê, the Rio Paranapanema and the Rio Paraná; area inhabited by the Indians Kaingang.

As from this time, the occupation started and continued in spite of the attacks of Kaingang and, in 1888, Bauru was set up in district of Pederneiras and municipality on August 1st, 1898. The new municipality survived of the coffee, in the least fertile grounds of the State, and becomes, in 1906 the starting point of the railroad towards the Bolivia.

The weak fertility of the ground around the city makes that the sectors terciaires developed with the detriment of agriculture. This tendency was reinforced by the presence of Universities. During the first decades of the XXe century, Bauru became an economic center of attraction with a strong Italian immigration , Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese and, more recently, Bolivian, Argentinian, Chilean, norte-American Palestine and .

Economy

The decline of the railroad and the growth of cities like Marília, President Prudente and Araçatuba more recently slowed down the growth of the city which remains the principal economic pole of the west of the State de São Paulo thanks to its university activity and with its network of roads and the railroad.

The name of the city

The assumption most accepted on the origin of the name of Bauru is that the area would have been known of Kaingangs like the ground of a named grass “uba” used by making baskets and of a bird called “uru”, type of galinacée.

Geography

The average altitude of the east city of 526 meters. Its climate is tropical wet. It is bathed by Rios Bauru and Rio Batalha|Batalha]]. The primitive vegetation of Atlantic forest was substituted by cérrado. Maximum precipitations are of 286 mm and the extreme average temperatures of 19 and 32° The city is cut by the following roads of State:
