First season (2004 - 2005)

The first season of thirteen one one hour duration episodes each one (surroundings 43 minutes without publicities) was ordered by Sci Fi Chanel on February 10th, 2004 on television and was diffused with the the United Kingdom and in Ireland between on October 18th, 2004 on television and on January 24th, 2005 on television on the television channel Sky One, which cofinanced the series with Sci Fi Chanel and NBC Universal. It was produced in 2004 by David Eick and Ronald D. Moore, with the same distribution as the télésuite of 2003. Moore then left its place of producer of the Caravan of strange the (HBO) to concentrate on Battlestar Galactica .

The first season of Battlestar Galactica was diffused in the United Kingdom and in Ireland three months before being it with the the United States and the Canada. This rare example of emission diffused out of early product out of the United States is the result of the investment partial of Sky One in the production of the first season.

The amount of time between the two diffusions involved an illegal distribution with large scales of the episodes via networks of Station-with-station, sometimes with times of a few hours after the first diffusion on Sky One. Even if Sci Fi Chanel and Moore deplored this practice and publicly required of the downloaders not to pirate the series, it is sometimes known as that this unauthorized distribution contributed to the American success of the series while giving with-priori favorable among certain key demographic groups. Later, the first episode was made available in free and legal loading since the Web site of Sci Fi Chanel. Moore thinks of this “generation Internet” by regularly diffusing a Podcast of comments relative to each episode on the same Web site of Sci Fi Chanel.

The series functioned as of its beginnings in the United Kingdom and in Ireland, engrossing of many comments favorable of criticisms and generating a considerable anticipation to the United States. The first episode diffused in the USA became one of most seen the programs chain Sci Fi with 3,1 million televiewers. The following episodes had a similar success. The first episode of the series, “33 minutes”, gained the Prix Hugo for the chain moved the time emission of box to program it starting from January 21st, 2007 Sundays. It was a first for the series.

A diffusion of the season in High-definition took place both in the United Kingdom and in Ireland in the United States.

After the initial arc of five episodes in connection with New Caprica, the third season is made up mainly of episodes Stand-alone. In the Podcast related to the last episode of the season, Ron Moore declares that in order to attract itself new spectators, Sci Fi Chanel made pressure on the production line team to make more solitary episodes instead of focusing itself on the stories in progress. The effect was all the opposite and Sci Fi then admitted with the production that the format stand-alone did not function for this series. Moreover, Sci Fi promised that it would not make any more pressures for the fourth season.

The pressure exerted by Sci Fi to carry out changes in the series formula is remarkable when it is seen that Moore and its team regularly affirmed that freedom that the network granted to them was one of its strong points; that the scenario writers had full power to do what they wanted at the time of the first two seasons. Moore explained in the podcasts first season why the only time where Sci Fi Chanel required of him to change something during the first two seasons, it was to bring a little joy and good mood in the series of which the tone seemed rather black (and was it). Moore accepted and ironically added a scene to the beginning of where many pilots celebrate the thousandths landing of the one as of their before a bomb is detached accidentally, killing them all. Moore declared whereas Sci Fi answered “one included/understood” and since the chain did not try any more to interfere in the course of the series again.

Flashbacks of Razor (2007)

Since October 5th, 2007 and until November 23rd, 2007, Sci Fi Chanel diffuses an about eight small two minute old inserts chroniquant the mission of the young person William Adama during the first war cylonne. These short labels include representations of cylons and their vehicles similar to those made popular thanks to Galactica . These mini-episodes are used as backdrop carrying out to new film drawn from the fictitious universe, Razor , and are known collectively under names of “Flashbacks of Razor ”. They are diffused each Friday evening, during a pause of the televised series Flash Gordon.

Sci Fi Chanel confirmed on March 22nd, 2007 on television that the series was renewed for a fourth season of 22 episodes, instead of the thirteen initially announced. The order includes a two hour old film (probably 1:30, without counting publicities) in front of being diffused during fourth quarters 2007 with the the United States, then directly put on sale on DVD. However, Ronald D. Moore specified that the history of this special episode will not take place after the events of the end of the season 3, but which she will tell certain adventures including the Pegasus . The fourth season strictly speaking will be diffused about April 2008 in the United States. Moore specified that will be the last season of the series.

Comments

This new series is a modernization of the original series Galactica of 1978 (often called since Battlestar Galactica 1978 or BSG 1978 ).

The concept, original, are to make a continuation/remake. A continuation because the series takes into account certain events of the first series, and remake because the events are very close, and certain characters take again the names of the original heroes.

The note of intention specifies that the authors want to keep the original idea, namely a convoy in distress with research of the Ground, contrary to the series of 1978 which had well quickly adopted the “chivalrous format” of the group of hero who helps all those that it meets on his road…

Style

The new series also dissociates the original one on several points.

Its creator and executive producer, Ronald D. Moore, talented producer and scenario writer of many episodes of Star Trek: The new generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as well as Roswell , wanted for Battlestar Galactica a realistic approach very , thus conferring to him a still new credibility in science fiction.

The new series transformed several protagonists: certain man-keys are from now on women. It also introduced the idea that Cylons, the Androïde S enemies of human, were created by the Man. In addition to the traditional soldiers Cylons but relookés , appears models humanoïdes, similar in all points to the human ones. The use of synthesized images of recent design contribute to the realism of the series. Lastly, a reproach often made with the Space operated corrected S.A.: the engagements in space are done in a quasi-silence.

Although the fans purists of the original series did not always appreciate these changes, the télésuite was the largest success of the American cable in 2003. It even helped with the creation of Sci Fi Chanel which was largest success in the history of the chain. This made it possible to create a series which is from now on at its fourth season.

Criticisms are enough unanimous to notice that this new series is definitely higher than its model, the magazine Time going even until declaring fine 2005 qu ' it acts of the best televisual series of the year. Dissatisfactions with the first hour grew blurred besides in front of the quality of the emission as the series advanced in the first two seasons.

Falling under the great tradition of eminent works of science fiction which are Star Trek and Babylon 5 , the scenario writers of Battlestar Galactica never hesitate to deal with problems social, political, moral, philosophical and ethical (contemporary or not) with the audacity and the freedom which the science fiction allows.

Others

A derived series was considered, but was not confirmed following the average results of audience of first half of the third season. Called Caprica , it would take the shape of a family chronicle having for backdrop the creation of cylons then the events having led to their revolt.
