Battles of Inonu

The battles of Inonu are two battles which opposed the Turkish Armée to the Greek Armée during the gréco-Turkish Guerre. They took place close to the Turkish village of Inonu and were both gained leave the Turks Mustafa Kemal. These battles marked a turning in the war, because they reversed the tendency, the Greeks being with the debate of the victorious war, batttant without difficulty the Turkish troops evil organized.

The first Battle of Inonu

The first Battle of Inonu took place from January 9th to 11th 1921. The Greek troops ordered by Papoulas were to attack the Turkish troops ordered by Ismet Pasha, cut off in the station from Inonu. Initially victorious, the Greeks pushed back the Turks who were about to give up Eskişehir, when the Greeks had to give up and withdraw themselves.

The second Battle of Inonu

The second Battle of Inonu had began with the attack from troops Greeks on the positions from the Turkish troops ordered by Ismet Pasha on March 26th, 1921. The Greeks, equipped better, pushed back Turkish and took the hill of Inonu on March 27th. A Turkish counter-attack in the night failed. March 31st, Turkish takes again the hill. At the court of April, Turkish continues their advance by taking again Afyon.

Consequences

In spite of the turning in the war which marks its two victories decisive for Turkish, a polemic was born on the action from Ismet Pasha. Order Turkish indeed missed its chance to destroy the whole of the Greek army present, which at the end of the battle sounded the retirement into good order. The two parts had in the 2 battles of many losses, and none of the two armies could from now on launch an offensive.

Ismet Pasha, one of the closest collaborators of Mustafa Kemal renomna its name in Ismet Inönü. He became the successor of Atätürk in 1938.
