Battles of Beleriand

The battles of Beleriand are events of the imaginary work of J.R.R. Tolkien. Five, they took place, as their name indicates it, in Beleriand, and are reported in Silmarillion .

The first battle

The first battle of Beleriand took place in year 1497 of the Trees. Morgoth, just escaped of Valinor, launched its Orques against the Sindar, at the time Elfes to only populate Beleriand. Badly armed and too dispersed, those were overcome everywhere safe with Doriath, where the capacity of the king Thingol and the queen Melian was strongest. In the west, the Elves of Círdan were besieged in their cities, while in the east, the Green Elves of Ossiriand underwent a serious defeat, their lord Denethor being killed at the top of the hill of Amon Ereb where it had been cut off.

The second battle: Dagor-nuin-Giliath

The second battle burst after the return of the Noldor in Ground of the Medium, very little time after the first. It was delivered in Mithrim, in the North-West of Beleriand. Noldor triumphed easily over the Orcs that to them sent Morgoth, and those which went up south, where they besieged Círdan and badgered Thingol, knew the same fate. The battle accepted the name of Dagor-nuin-Giliath , “battles under stars”, because it began before the lifting from the Moon. It is with this battle that was killed largest out of Noldor: Fëanor.

The third battle: Dagor Aglareb

The third battle, known as Dagor Aglareb, “battles glorious”, took place in year 60 of the First Age. It showed an easy victory of Noldor and mark the beginning of the seat of Angband by the latter.

The fourth battle: Dagor Bragollach

The fourth battle was named Dagor Bragollach, “battles of the sudden flame”, because it began when, in the middle of the winter 455 P.A., the torrents of flames spouted out of Angband and devastated the plain of Ard-Galen, killing a great number of Elves. After that, the armies of Morgoth devastated the Dorthonion and reflect in diverts of them wire of Fëanor and Finarfin, thus breaking the head office of Angband.

The fifth battle: Nirnaeth Arnoediad

The fifth battle, most famous of all, took place in 472 P.A. and was called Nirnaeth Arnoediad, “the innumerable tears”, because it showed a disaster without precedent. The forces of the Elves and the Men of Beleriand were however joined together under the banner of Maedhros, oldest son of Fëanor, and his/her cousin Fingon, including ten Elfes miles come from Gondolin, the hidden city of Turgon, and that no one did not expect to see coming. The fate of the battle was a long time undecided, but rocked when Ulfang, a man with the service of Caranthir, betrays it with the profit of Morgoth, sowing confusion in the rows of the Elves. Fingon was killed, the wire of Fëanor forced to flee in the south, and Turgon could rejoin its city only thanks to the sacrifice of the men of the people of Hador, who covered his retirement and perished until the last, except Húrin, most valiant of all, which was done prisoner and taken along to Angband.
