Battlefield 2

Battlefield 2 is a Video game based on the frankness Battlefield from Electronic Arts. It left the June 22nd 2005 to the the United States (although announced for spring 2004). It uses a Moteur play incorporating a Moteur physique. The play is often compared with Desert Combat , a MOD of play for Battlefield 1942 placing the player in a contemporary universe. And indeed, when Trauma Studios, the studio which developed this MOD , was repurchased by DICE, the developers worked on BF2. In 2005 EA marketed the first extension of play named Special forces which integrates new forces like the Navy SEAL, SAS, Spetsnaz Russian, and the forces of elite of other countries. She adds new charts, weapons, and vehicles.

Gameplay

General principle

Battlefield 2 takes again the gameplay of Battlefield 1942 (BF1942) and Battlefield Vietnam (BFV), namely a war game in which 2 teams clash on a waiter. To gain, a team must reduce the number of tickets of the adversary to 0, or arrange itself so that its team has the greatest number of tickets at the end of assigned time.

To be done, a team must capture flags and maintain them in her camp more the possible for a long time. To capture a flag takes time during which a soldier is exposed to enemy fire (the flags are generally in ground discovered and largely exposed).

The other means is to kill out of the enemy soldiers. Each time an enemy soldier dies, its team loses a ticket. Attention however, a doctor can revive a soldier combined with his defibrillator, during a 15 seconds time per defect. If it does it, the team does not lose her ticket. However the player having killed the soldier revived guard his points of slaughter.

Each team is made up specialized soldiers, having their own equipment: specialized weapons, grenades, bullet-proof jacket, tools (mines, defibrillator and case of care, adjustable open-end wrench…).

Battlefield 2 is also playable alone against club-footed S. But unfortunately this part of the play is not very developed and is there primarily to learn how to play (in particular with the air vehicles) and to control a FPS.

Environment scenaristic and graphic

Battlefield 2 has as a framework the modern confrontations of the 21e century. Three armies face: The Body of the Marines of the the United States, armed forces CMO (Coalition of the the Middle East) and the Army of release of the people (China). It is it should be noted that curiously, the the United States are systematically found to fight the CMO or the China, and that these two last never clash. According to an interview of the creators of the play, to have a battle between the Chinese armed forces CMO and armed forces, would create some contradictions with the scenario of Battlefield 2 which, in the passing, has for the moment never be known. At present, we still do not know why China declared the war in the United States, why the countries of the Middle East met to create the same army, why Russia and Great Britain fight battles enter they, why Russian rebels (it is an allusion to the rebels tchetchenes….) were born… The scenarios not being in any event credible, one could very well have imagined a confrontation between China and the CMO.

The decorations are relatively varied and have as a framework the oil fields of China, the cities of the Middle East or the islands of the Persian Gulf. Since the booster rocket pack " Armoured Fury" , the theater of the engagements are also held on the American ground. The players have at their disposal a multitude of vehicles, whose appearance varies according to the army which uses them: Jeep S, tanks, Helicopter S, Plane S, boats… The graphic engine posts (for the powerful machines) of the vegetation, of the convincing luminous effects (in particular for water).

Team game

The true innovation of Battlefield 2 lies in its system of team game which was reconsidered. Thus appear the sections, kinds of under-equipped carried out by a chief of section, being able to contain to 6 members. The sections have their own channel of dialog, like their own system of order. Above the sections the Commander is who with the load of the total orders, as of strike artilleries, supplies and radars/drones. Thus when a commander gives an order to a section, the chief of section to the possibility of accepting or to refuse the order by the COMMO ROSE or vocally (by a micro present in the edition State Major de Battlefield 2). In the case of the acceptance of the order, a beacon appears on the minicarte. But the chief of section preserves the possibility of giving his own orders to his section and without assistance of the commander.

  • Each player has a contextual menu, the COMMO ROSE, enabling him to send text messages such as the request of a doctor, the refusal or the acceptance of an order of the Commander, etc Moreover, it make it possible to communicate to the team, via the minicarte, the position of an enemy located (the computer is based on the enemy unit inside a zone around the reticle of aiming. If no unit is in this field, the minicarte posts a question mark to the position defined by the reticle)

  • Each player belonging to a section has a menu of order in addition to that of sound finely contextual. Thanks to this menu of order, it can ask orders its chief of section, and ask an artillery striking, a supply, or a coverage radar which still are very little used by the players of Battlefield 2.

  • the Commander has a single interface of command by which it is able to start strike artilleries, coverage radar and supplies, like directing tactics, to check the state of the troops and espionner enemy movements through a kind of satellite/U2. The commander being vulnerable when it is in this tactical mode because it cannot move, the ordering mode taking all the visual space to him for which it must have the need, it generally hides in a recess of the chart when it addresses his orders and coordinates strike them and/or actions for the sections.

Principle of synergy

To support/force the team game, Battlefield 2 introduced some elements of gameplay synergistic.

  • When a doctor, a sapper or a soldier of support are in a vehicle, the soldiers and vehicles close profit automatically from no-claims bonus to repair, care or supply.

  • Beaucoup of vehicles is more effective when they are occupied by more than one soldier. For example the combat helicopters are equipped with guided rockets and a gun only usable by the second player.

  • an effective section requires all the classes of soldiers to function as well as possible of its possibilities and to face all kinds of situations, that is a defense of flag, a ambush, a destruction of armoured tanks…


Points

Another innovation of Battlefield 2 compared to the old titles of the series is the installation of a system of grading of the players. On the waiters classified, called “ranked”, the points marked by the player are recorded on a central server.

By gaining points, the player gains decorations and goes up in rank. Those then allowing him to free new weapons. The rank of the player is visible by the other players and thus shows quickly the experiment of this last. The player more graded is also priority to occupy the post of commander if it wishes it.

The ranks are numerous and evolve/move at the same time as the player:

The player gains points:

  • by eliminating an adversary (2 points)

  • by helping with elimination from an adversary (1 point)
  • by eliminating an adversary in the zone from a allied flag (3 points: 2 points for the elimination of an adversary + 1 point for the defense of the flag)
  • by neutralizing an enemy flag (2 points)

  • by helping a team-member with the neutralization of an enemy flag (1 point)
  • by capturing a flag (2 points)
  • by helping a team-member with the capture of a flag (1 point)
  • by restocking its fellow-members with ammunition (1 point)

  • by repairing combined vehicles, as well as the tactical infrastructures of its team (1 point)

  • by looking after its fellow-members (1 point)

  • by reanimating a fellow-member on the ground (2 points)

  • by destroying an enemy tactical infrastructure (1 point)

The player loses points:

  • by wounding a fellow-member with 50% (- 2 points)

  • by inflicting damage with a vehicle combined with 50% (- 1 point)
  • by killing a fellow-member (- 4 points)

These points are cumulable. If for example, you kill an adversary whereas it captured a flag of your camp, you gain 2 + 1 = 3 points.

Equipment

A player with the possibility of choosing among 7 kits of equipment:
  • Attack : also balanced between defense and attacks, the soldier of attack is the spearhead of any attack on a point or a flag. Equipped with a rifle of attack, a grenade thrower and a bullet-proof jacket, it is often found in frontline, assigned mainly with the capture of flag. It also has a smoke grenade, useful in the difficult retirements or to make safe a capture of flag in exposed ground. Since the official extension Special forces , it is also possible to free grenades flash which can be used against the vehicles (tank or VAB) because they strongly plug.

  • Sniper : equipped with a dress of camouflage and a rifle with telescopic sight (zoom x5), the sniper privileges the covered zones even the high points (it is not a chance which many grounds have of the cranes of building site and the accessible roofs only by scales). It cannot run very a long time and must hide as quickly as possible because its principal function is to see: it is the eyes and the ears (sometimes) of all the section present on the ground. It is also equipped with antipersonnelles mines of Claymore type (2 specimens) and present under the name of: undermine AED, being used to protect its backs when it is in position of shooting or to protect a flag at the time of enemy attacks.   • Sapper : its main role is to repair and destroy the vehicles. It thus has frightening mines anti-tank device, only started by the enemy vehicles (since the patch 1.2). It is armed with a pump rifle (automatic for the European army and CMO) which makes of it a frightening element in close combat and essential in a section but useless with more than 10 to 20 meters.

  • Special forces : he is the commando of Battlefield 2. Its relatively light armament is compensated by its speed because it does not carry a bullet-proof jacket. It is employed mainly with the destruction of tanks and equipment on the ground (radars, guns of Artillerie) thanks to its explosives C4, like in raids flashes behind the enemy lines (to capture a slightly defended flag for example). These missions are largely facilitated by the fact that it is invisible with the satellite location when the player is motionless. (in reality?). Attention, as opposed to what its name indicates, it is not only present in the official extension Special forces, it also appears in the original version of Battlefield 2 .

  • Anti-tank : the anti-tank soldier is equipped with a radio-controlled Lance-roquettes able to destroy the vehicles, and to a certain extent, helicopters in quasi stationary flight. Its principal weapon is a relatively weak machine pistol making it vulnerable to the combat of remote infantry and it has a bullet-proof jacket. It can free thanks to the points a not very powerful rifle with pump but with a rate of shooting devastator.

Charts of play

Battlefield 2 includes/understands, to date, 21 charts (12 with launching + 3 with the patches + 3 in the booster rocket pack " Forces" euro; + 3 in the booster rocket pack " Armoured Fury"), each one declined in 3 versions to be able to accommodate more players. Thus there exist the versions adapted for 16,32 or 64 players. Almost all the charts are usable in mode Multijoueur. Only 3 charts are excluded and certain charts in 16 are accessible in mode simple player by the means of club-footed (soldiers represented by levels of difficulty (easy, average, difficult) and managed by the artificial intelligence of the simulating play of the players). On the coasts of the Persian Gulf, the USA gave an opinion. They are however likely to be pushed back with the sea.

History of the development and update

This video game is famous for its many patchs (corrective) and their delay.

  • Patch v1.01
The patch v1.01 (first update) introduced however more problems than it does not correct any, in particular ranges exploitings or bugs which make progress the score of the player more than it would not have.
  • Patch v1.02
The update 1.02 corrects the escapes of memory and another problems if ingérable that before the release of this version, the persons in charge advised to download a software to pass by again in version 1.00 rather than to use the 1.01.
  • Patch v1.03
To correct several critical bugs and to improve the play, the version 1.03 left on October 4th, 2005. It also contains a new chart called Wake Island 2007, which is a reactualization of a popular chart of the play Battlefield 1942 .
  • Patch v1.1
At the time of the exit of the extension Battlefield 2 Special forces , an update 1.1 was delivered at the same time. This version allows the compatibility of the extensions, the players of Battlefield 2 which can control the tanks used in Special forces, or allow to the users Special forces to use the weapons freed in Battlefield 2 original. This update was delivered with the extension.
  • Patch v1.12
EA published a patch 1.12 in December, shortly after the exit of Special forces. This version withdraws the possibility of using hooks and the tyroliennes in the chart the Iron Alligator . The players can install this version on Battlefield 2 without worrying about the presence or not of the extension Special forces .
  • Patch v1.20
Patch 1.20, left on February 14th, brings some modifications of gameplay (like the addition of the Drone, visible when it is effective and destructible in flight), and correct several bugs posting.
  • Patch v1.21
The patch v1.21, left on March 10th, aimed at correcting the problems that the preceding patch had caused (!). It brought back the stability of the play which had been compromised. That looked at mainly the graphics cards and some aspects of the extension Special forces.
  • Patch v1.22
The patch v1.22 (a little after the exit Euro Forces ) corrected problems of this extension and improved the stability of the waiters. Inter alia, the rate of shooting of FN P90 passed from 600 to 900 blows by minute and the deviation of the light Mitrailleuses of support was adjusted.
  • Patch v1.3
Some month after the exit of the patch 1.22, the patch 1.3 left the May 23rd, bringing a novel mode of play: co-operation. It will be a question of playing 2 people or more against club-footed in LAN or on Internet. This patch also brings a radical change in the Gameplay, removing what is called the consistent squad hopping with the change of the leader of squad when this last dies so that the other members of the group can respawner on a new chief of squad. This withdrawal was seen by part of the players as a degradation of the team game which made success BF2 whereas contrary to others approved this change which according to them brought a more realistic play because obliging a true team game where the players were to protect their chief from squad, not to give up it on the first occasion and which moreover made disappear from the tactics of spontaneous Generation of squads which killed the basic concept of BF2. Part of the communities of certain countries were then mobilized so that EA Games reconsiders its idea to remove the squad hopping . A large petition was signed by more: 11000 players in order to protest against the exit of the patch 1.3.

In spite of that, the studios of DIGITAL Illusions THIS decided not to change their policy and to implement the patch 1.3 such as it was envisaged. This episode was included/understood like a treason by certain players and certain teams of the communities of Battlefield 2. Many teams among the most recognized like the code7 in Europe or the aAa in France decided to put a term at their engagement on Battlefield 2 whose future in competition seemed to them increasingly dubious.

The second Pack Booster rocket, Battlefield 2: Armor-plated forces, which was at the origin to leave at the same time, took delay, and will leave finally only in May 2006.

  • Patch v1.4

The patch v1.40 officially announced for August 2006 finally left on September 5th, 2006. He adds a new chart ( Road to Jalalabaad ) and adds an option with the waiter to prohibit the use of vehicles, it is the mode Infanterie .

It should be noted that the preceding plays of the frankness Battlefield ( Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam ) generally contained awkward bugs which unbalanced the Gameplay, and which were corrected in the later versions by updates, to become completely stable plays.

  • Patch 1.41

The patch left two months after the patch 1.4, on November 16th, 2006 is judicious to result in an notable improvement on the stability of the waiters in particular on the charts Great Wall, Operation Smoke Screen and Taraba Quarry (charts of Euro Forces) and gives a better general stability to the play. There does not exist incremental version to pass from the patch 1.4 to the version 1.41. The version Full (which passes in 1.41 any version of the play) of 536 Mo is only available.
