Battle of the bridge

The Bataille of the bridge took place in 634 between the Moslem Arabs carried out by Abou Ubaid and the forces of the empire Sassanide carried out by Bahman. The sassanides left there victorious.

The Moslems had initially had some successes against Persians which had reinforced Abou Ubaid. In answer, the Persan ones sent troops carried out by the general Bahman veteran, in order to go on Al-Hira. The army camped in Quss Natif on bank is Euphrate, at a short distance in the north of Al-Hira and a little in lower part Koufa.

When Abou Ubaid learns the movements from the Persan ones, it makes go the Moslem army since Hira and camps on western bank of Euphrate in the village of Marauha. In spite of the council of his assistance Salit bin Qais, Abou Ubaid ordered that a made bridge of boats is thrown on the river and the Moslem army crossed the bridge the morning of November 28th, 634.

When the battle started, the Moslem cavalry advanced but was confronted with the elephants of war of the Persian army, entraiant confusion and the distress. The Persan ones are ensuites advanced, killing Abou Ubaid and its second in the violence of their attack. Whereas the Moslem forces were withdrawn under the command of Muthanna on other side of Euphrate, only 3.000 men gathered on a total of 9.000. Approximately 2.000 died as combatants, 2.000 others died drowned and still 2.000 escaped towards Médine or elsewhere.

Muthanna worried owing to the fact that, the shortly after their victory, the Persan ones would continue the Moslems on other side of Euphrate, but, at this time, a revolt burst against Rostam in the Persian capital and Rostam recalled Bahman to Al-Madain to help it to circumscribe the revolt.
