Battle of the Badon Mount
the battle of the mount Badon , (the mount Latin Badonicus in ) is a military defeat that the troops britto-Romans and Celte S of Ambrosius Aurelianus inflicted with the army Anglo-Saxone between the years 490 and 510, during the invasion of the island of Brittany. It is an major event in the political and military history of Great Britain. However, one does not know with certainty the place where this one was held, several assumptions are proposed, and would be either in England, or with the Wales:
-
Mynydd Baedan in the south of Wales,
- Badbury Hillfort/Badbury Boxing rings, a Oppidum (strengthened hill) of Age of iron in the Dorset.
- Bath, in the Somerset site suggested by Geoffroy de Monmouth. Bath was Saxon assous the names of Baþon , Baðon , and Baðanceaster . If the battle take place in the surroundings of Bath, it is obviously board which it was held on one of the hills in the neighborhood, the city not being the epicentre of the confrontation. The word " bath" is of Germanic origin , but " Badon" is a Celtic word of origin. Under the Romans, Bath was known under the name of Aquae Sulis , but the site (and the close hill Solsbury Hill ) were already popular good before the arrival of the Romans.
- Buxton, Thermal spa in the Derbyshire
- Castle of Liddington, oppidum dating from the Bronze Age and the beginning of the Age of iron in the Wiltshire.
- Solsbury Hill hill close to Bath, site suggested by Geoffroy de Monmouth.
Since the 9ère century, the legend allots this victory to the King Arthur, which would have lived at the same time. According to certain specialists, Arthur would have been also made crown at this place by Merlin.
