Battle of the Azores
The Battle of the island Terceira (July 26th 1582), is the first naval Bataille of the history or of the Galion S clashed… It took place in the context of the invasion of the Portugal by the Spanish army of Philippe II for the succession of the throne of Portugal.
She saw to clash the Spanish armada ordered by Alvaro de Bazan marquis de Santa Cruz with the French marine of Philippe Strozzi sent to support Prior de Crato, claiming Portuguese with the throne and thus to prevent that the Portuguese empire falls between the hands from the Spanish empire.
The Spanish armada was made up of 28 ships, the French fleet counted 60 of them. The evening of July 26th the French fleet essuie a terrible defeat and loses more than 1000 men and 10 ships, whereas the Spaniards do not lose any ship and counts less than 230 dead. Philippe Strozzi, captured, will be thrown to the sea by the winners.
Consequences
Following this battle, the Azores are in their turn invaded and the Spanish empire annexes all the Portuguese territories throughout the world.
