Battle of Wimpfen

The battles of Wimpfen took place the May 6th 1622 for the first period of the Guerre Thirty Year old. Finished by a severe defeat of the Protestants, it also marks, practically, the end of the military career of the duke Georg Friedrich de Bade-Durlach.

After had dispersed some 70  000 men engaged in the Protestant army after the Bataille of Wimpfen and that the Elector Palatine Frederic V füt turned over to the north of the Palatinat, Georges-Frederic de Bade was confronted again with the troops of the Catholic League ordered by Tilly, reinforced this time of a Spanish army under the orders of Córdoba. Although in clear numerical inferiority, the army of Georges-Frederic de Bade started nevertheless to resist the catholic troops before undergoing a bloody defeat close to Wimpfen.

Consequences

The losses were established each side with approximately 2  000 men. Immediately after their victory, Tilly and Córdoba are reflected in having to prevent the junction of the remaining Protestant troops with those of Mansfeld and Christian of Brunswick. Moreover, this last soon was attacked and overcome at the time of the Bataille of Höchst.
