Battle of Vukovar
}} The town of Vukovar is besieged during August 1991 by the Serb forces during their offensive in Croatia and undergoes an intensive bombardment which confines the population in the cellars for three months, without any humanitarian aid. After 87 days of seat, the November 18th, the 1500 Croatian combatants of the commander Mile Dedaković who still defended the city return, leaving the population in prey with the exactions of the Serb troops of Vojislav Seselj which penetrate in a city reduced to a field of ruins and ashes. The population is then joined together in the stage, the men in age to fight are separated from the women, the children and the old men. The first will never be re-examined. The same fate awaits the 420 wounded hospital where was a French mercenary. A few days later, the Red Cross finally arrives on the spot, but cannot that to note the damage generated by a battle which will have been characterized by its incredible violence.
Today still the effects of one of the bloodiest episodes of the Yugoslav conflict are far from being unobtrusive. Croats and Serb cohabit with difficulty in the town of Vukovar rebuilt; they avoid féquenter. The schoolboys of the two communities continue to follow their lesson in separate establishments.
