Battle of Villalar

The Bataille of Villalar takes place the April 23rd 1521 with Villalar, in the Province of Valladolid (Spain). She opposes the troops will comuneras carried out by Juan de Padilla, Juan Bravo and Francisco Maldonado with the imperial forces of Charles I {{er}} of Spain. These last gain the victory which puts an end to the known popular revolt under the name of Guerre of the Communities of Castille.

The troops ordered by Padilla confine with Torrelobatón (province of Valladolid) and must make movement towards Toro (Province of Zamora) or Valladolid. Under the pressure of its men and in spite of difficult climatic conditions, Padilla decides the actuation of the army in direction of Tora to find reinforcements and provisions there. It rains and the imperial army, installed in a nearby village (Peñaflor de Hornija), awaits the army of the rebels.

The meeting takes place close to Toro. The army of the comuneros , in numerical situation of inferiority, in vain brings back the combat in the streets of the city. Much flees and the remaining troops are massacred. Between 500 and 1.000 comuneros are killed, 6.000 are made prisoners, the chiefs of the rebellion are stopped then decapitated.

In remembering this disastrous battle, the April 23rd was selected like Jour of Castille and León and is the subject of an annual commemoration with Villalar of los Comuneros.
