Battle of Vertières

The Battle of Vertières, the November 18th 1803 opposes the French troops dispatched by Bonaparte and the insurgent slaves of Saint-Domingue. Napoleon intended to subdue the rebellion of the slaves, to reconquer the city fallen with the hands from the rebels and to restore slavery on the island, the general of Rochambeau is thus in charge of this task. The battle proceeds in Vertières in the north of the country close to the Cape-French, current the Cape-Haitian.

Surprising the resistance and the final victory of the rebels carried out by Jean-Jacques Dessalines, oblige Rochambeau to capitulate.

The island is proclaimed independent of the France on January 1st 1804 with the Gonaïves, Haiti then becomes the first black republic in the world.

France remains still dubitative concerning this emancipation, in 1826 Charles X claims an allowance of 150 franc million gold to the young republic so that France recognizes the independence of Haiti. This debt will be reduced in 1838 to 90 million francs and will be completely versed in France.
