Battle of Saucourt-in-Vimeu

The battles of Saucourt-in-Vimeu is a victory gained the August 3rd 881 by the Carolingian troops of Louis III and Carloman II over the Viking S.

Following the battle of Thimium (Timiomum Thuin or Thiméon close to Charleroi), the Viking S start again their raids on the frank kingdom. In November 880 they are with Courtrai, in December Cambrai and Arras flames. In 881, it was with the turn of Amiens and Corbie to be ransacked. But in August 881, the king Louis III gains over the invader a big first victory with Saucourt-in-Vimeu (the current hamlet of Saucourt located between Valines and Fressenneville at about fifteen km at the west of Abbeville).
This battle, where nearly 8.000 Vikings perish, has a repercussion such as it is immortalisée by the Chanson of Louis (the Ludwigslied ).
