Battle of Saint-Quentin (1557)

The battles of Saint-Quentin (August 1557) is a Spanish victory over the France. The resistance of the Saint-Quentinois inhabitants under the control of the hero Gaspard de Coligny, count of Coligny, lord of Chastillon-on-Loing, knight about the king, governor and lieutenant-general of the town of Paris, Isle de France, Picardy and Artois, general colonel of the infantry and Admiral de France (it was called also Gaspard II of Coligny), arrived in the city in the night from August 2nd to 3rd 1557, with 500 men armed and the assistance with the baron d' Armerval, Mr Théligny, Mister de Gibercourt and of Jean V, duke of Caulaincourt and with the assistance of the inhabitants, they resisted seventeen days and seventeen nights.
The small town of Saint-Quentin, which counts at the time 8.000 inhabitants, was carried of attack and was damaged in blood and the flames.
This act of bravery vis-a-vis the invader was commemorated by the construction of a recalling monument évênement, trônant on the place of the October 8th in Saint-Quentin (department of the Aisne) after having remained a long time on the place of the Town hall.
History
The August 10th, victory of the Spaniards of Emmanuel-Philibert of Savoy over the constable of Montmorency. Saint Quentin passes to the Spaniards. The army of Philippe II, strong of 60 000 men, cannot walk on Paris for lack of supply.
The first volume of " the royal house of Savoy " , historical novel of Alexandre Dumas father, reports this tragic episode.
