Battle of Ourique
The battles of Ourique took place in the countryside of Ourique, current Alentejo (in the south of the Portugal) on July 25th 1139. There were opposed the Christian troops, ordered by Alphonse-Henriques of Portugal and those of five kings Moors who were weakened by internal dissidences. The Christian victory was such as Alphonse-Henriques autoproclama king de Portugal under the name of Alphonse Ier of Portugal with the total support of its troops.
On the flag of the country the five blue ecus represent the kings Moors overcome of Lisbon, Badajoz, Beja, Elvas and Evora. The divine assistance which made it possible Alphonse Ier to be victorious is commemorated by white points representing the five wounds of the Christ.
