Battle of Moncontour
October 30th, 1569, at the time of the battles of Moncontour , which took place with Moncontour (France), the catholic forces of the king Charles IX, under the command of the duke of Anjou, beat the troops Huguenot, are ordered by the Admiral Gaspard de Coligny. This battle takes place during the wars of religion.
Countryside preceding the battle
The admiral of Coligny, coming from the south, had put the seat in front of Poitiers. After seven weeks, close taking the city, it must raise the seat in front of the advance of the royal army, which it meets in the North-West of Poitiers, close to the commune of Moncontour.
Unfolding
The preparation of the battle is marked by the treason of mercenaries to the service of the Protestants. Weakened, the Protestant army is beaten, and the Catholique S triumph.According to the historians of the time, the attack was of short duration, but particularly bloody. As regards Protestant, one counts between 6000 and 10 000 died and captive; as for the catholics, their losses did not exceed the 600 men.
Continuations
As after the Rock-the Bee where the Protestants had massacred their prisoners, the catholics make in the same way, although Henri of Anjou saves some French gentilhommes.Coligny succeeds in going down towards the south and reconstituting an army thereafter.
