Battle of Luzzara

The battles of Luzzara took place the August 15th 1702, during the War of succession of Spain. Eugene of Savoy lack to gain the victory over Louis-Joseph de Vendôme by taking by storm the camping of this last close to the town of Luzzara, over Right Bank of the Po.

Be a prelude to

The July 12th with Casement bolt, Philippe V then nineteen years old, come in person with the head from a small quota of approximately: 2000 soldiers, to defend the possessions of Spain in Italy, joined the French Army made up of approximately: 30000 men ordered by Vendôme. They are joined by a quota of the prince de Vaudémont, general governor of the Milanais on behalf of the king d' Espagne

The battle

In its memories, Saint Simon tells that the two armies arrived together the August 15th over the 4 hours of the afternoon, on both sides of a dam, without apparently being informed of the presence of the other. According to other authors, the prince Eugene follower of the effect of surprise would have arrived the first to tighten a ambush with the second.

It is not known which of the two armies opened fire, but a thing is sure, it is that the French Army at least, had to fight in functioning order and not in battle order. The combat was very violent. The night puts an end to the hostilities and the two camps benefits from it to strengthen their position.

Consequences

The two camps assert the victory, in Paris as with Vienna one celebrates the victory by a mass.

After the battle, the two armies remained a long time in the vicinity one of the other, before the French, with the approach of the bad season, do not leave the area the November 4th, putting thus fine at the countryside 1702.
