Battle of Jarnac
The battles of Jarnac , on March 13rd, 1569, opposes, at the time of the wars of religion, the Protestant army ordered by the prince de Condé, with that of king de France, ordered by the duke of Anjou, brother of king de France. This one gains a not-decisive victory on the military level, but the cruelties exerted by the catholics after their victory exacerbate hatreds.
Countryside preceding the battle
In retirement with the castle of Walnut trees, the prince of Condé must flee (with the admiral which was in the vicinity with Tanlay) to escape a removal of the royal troops. A Third war of religion is re-ignited when it publishes a proclamation the August 25th 1568. Henri of Anjou, younger brother of the king, had been appointed general lieutenant of the kingdom with mission of overcoming the Huguenot S.
The October 26th, the royal army surprises the provençaux huguenots with Mensignac. However, to the east, Wolfgang of Bavaria, duke of Two-Bridge and William of Orange had entered to France with their Reître S. It became necessary to overcome large forces huguenotes of Cop and Coligny.
Unfolding
The royal scouts, at the orders of the duke of Own way, arrive to Jarnac. On its side, the avant-garde huguenote arrives at the borough close to Cognac. Being discovered, the huguenots occupy Jarnac and the royal ones are folded up on left bank of Charente.
In the night, the duke of Anjou makes restore and double the bridge of Châteauneuf and passes on Right Bank. Surprised, Coligny pains, during three hours, to gather its scattered forces. The royal ones take the village of Bassac. Coligny makes it begin again by of Andelot which must be folded up in front of the reîtres of Rhingrave and a thousand of arquebusiers on the village of Triac. Coligny then makes give the Cavalerie of Cop - the order is cancelled but does not arrive at the recipient. With three hundred riders this last is inserted in the opposing army. Counter-attack side it is encircled of all shares and its troop is decimated and itself is assassinated by Montesquiou, captain of the guards of the duke of Anjou, whereas it had gone.
The infantry and the artillery huguenotes, which did not take part in the combat are folded up on Cognac.
Continuations
The battle has of another significant consequence only the death of Cop and the increased role of Coligny.
If they did not gain with Jarnac a decisive battle, the catholics of it are not less extremely satisfied. Their reconstituted army has just proven reliable on the ground: since the seat of Orleans, in February 1563, never it as well behaved. Moreover, the victory is worth with Henri, duke of Anjou (future Henri III, king de France) to be greeted, in France and in all the courses European, like a hero and a military engineering.
The Battle of Moncontour, a few months later, is more decisive.
