Battle of Höchst

The battles of Höchst opposed the June 20th 1622, during the Guerre Thirty Year old, the troops of the Protestant Union to those of the Catholic League. The Protestants underwent a demolished cuisante there.

The commander-in-chief of the Protestants, Christian of Brunswick left in June 1622, with the head of approximately 15  000 men of the area of évêchés of Westphalia towards that of Hesse-Darmstadt to make there their junction with the armed forces of the count Ernst von Mansfeld. When Christian and his army had crossed the Main around Höchst thanks to a bridge of fortune, it met the June 20th a catholic army come from the south under the command of the count of Tilly and the count of Bronckhorst who made open a very heavy fire. The army of Christian of Brunswick succeeds in pushing back several attacks of the catholics but during the confrontation, panic was propagated among the men who were on the bridge.

Many soldiers fell into the Hand where it however drowned Christian of Brunswick managed to escape with its cavalry to join Mansfeld. The losses of the Protestant infantry important, in deaths, were wounded and prisoners. The train and all the artillery fell to the hands from Tilly and Bronckhorst. But Christian of Brunswick had been able, at least, to save its cavalry and its war treasure.
