Battle of Donzy
With Donzy and Holy-Dove, localities located at the East of the Cosne-on-Loire, the Nazi S massacred as reprisal of the workmen who went to their work.
A few days after the bloody operation of Thauvenay, on July 1st 1944 towards 4:30 of the morning, a German troop estimated at approximately 1000 men, whose feldkommandantur and Feldgendarmerie were installed with the Cosne-on-Loire under the orders of the Eberlé officer, kept until the evening the roads of Donzy, Chateauneuf, Cessy-the-wood, Sully-the-Turn and encircled Holy-Dove whose wood “of the Furnaces”, near to the hamlet of Couthion (commune of Holy-Dove) had been occupied for a few days by the resistant ones.
As of their arrival, German, of which one of their motorcylcist in recognition had been killed the morning even by a sentinel F.F.I on the road of Couthion, took along seven inhabitants of Holy-Dove of which a refugee. Little time after the death of the motorcylcist, by fear of reprisals, the inhabitants of Couthion, was flee in wood where German did not dare to venture. The hamlet made up of 2 or 3 houses, was burnt in the afternoon.
There the farm of Galonnerie had been burnt in the morning, the enemy having pretexted to have found scraps of parachute. The farmer whose 2 old wire of 14 and 16 years were flee in wood, was ligotté and taken along, his seriously wounded wife whereas taken fright it fled, died the following day at the hospital of Cosne (the autopsy revealed 32 glares in the abdomen). The stopped men, including several inhabitants of Donzy, were locked up in a barn with the hamlet of Villarnault (commune of Holy-Dove), all were questioned and beaten with blows of stick.
Around 10 a.m., the prisoners of Co.-Dove, except three were transported by trucks in the direction of Chateauneuf; those of Donzy were it about midday. It is only around 4 p.m. that German made assemble the last three prisoners of Holy-Dove on a tank and slackened them shortly after.
As opposed to what supposed the inhabitants of Donzy and of Co.-Dove, German did not take along their prisoners to Cosne or Nevers. It is only one week later July 7th and 8th that the dispersed corpses were found with several km of Co.-Dove; those of the inhabitants of Donzy in the wood of the Furnaces with Asvins, that of another prisoner in a field of Villarnault, those of Holy-Dove in a direction opposed to the locality “the spine” with a few meters of the road of Co.-Dove with Donzy. All had been tortured, the crashed to pieces majority the broken members, the jaw and had been completed of a ball in the nape of the neck.
