Battle of Cerrito
The Bataille of Cerrito is a Bataille delivered the December 31st 1812, during the second seat of Montevideo, at the time of the war of independence of Uruguay.
Besieged since October 20th, 1812 by the troops of Eastern Buenos Aires and the (Uruguyan) of Jose Gervasio Artigas, ordered by the Argentinian general Jose Rondo, the marshal Vigodet, last Spanish governor of Montevideo, opposes a savage resistance. In December, the forces of Artigas are forced to leave the seat and their departure does not pass unperceived from the Spaniards who decide to benefit from it to prepare an exit.
This one takes place on December 31st. 1600 Spanish soldiers emerge from Montevideo and attack by surprised the Argentinian camping located on the hill of the Cerrito. The battle is rough, but the Argentinian ones remain Master of the ground and reject the attackers in their lines.
This victory worsens the situation of the Spaniards but do not involve the fall of the city; indeed Vigodet can count on its fleet for the supply and the contribution of reinforcements and only the naval victory of the Admiral Guillermo Brown at the time of the Bataille of the port del Buceo in 1814, will make its desperate plight and will lead to its capitulation on June 20th, 1814.
