Battle of Bobr

The battles of Bobr is a confrontation limited between elements of the Légion of the French volunteers (LVF) within the Wehrmacht and the Soviet armed , at the end of the Second world war, close to the river Bobr, in the South-east of Borissov.

Involved forces, before the confrontation

The battle of Bobr proceeded June 26th and 27th 1944. German side, are Ier battalion, 13th company of IVe battalion and two companies of IIIe battalion, of the regimental PAK of the Légion of the French volunteers, is approximately 600 men, assisted the first day of a hundred S Polizei. Soviet side, are aligned four or five Bataillons with complete manpower of the Red Army , shouldered by several tanks T-34.

Following the general retirement of the face of the East in the sector " center" White Russia (Bielorussia), the French soldiers of the Wehrmacht is buried to delay the progression of the Soviets and to allow divisions Wehrmacht to fold up itself by the Magistrale to avoid surrounding. They settle on June 22nd 1944 close to the Bobr , to about fifty kilometers of the town of Borissov which the Bérésina crosses.

The battle

They are reinforced, on June 25th 1944 by four tanks Tigres and 6 parts of 37 mm of the PAK. This Kampfgruppe is directed by the commander Jean Bridoux, wire of the Minister for the war of Vichy.

The attack begins on June 26th at four o'clock in the morning. Although the Soviet have an important heavy material - many guns, Katyusha S, heavy mortars and very many Russian tank and American - the French resist. They undergo 5 attacks, they fight even with the body with body to preserve a cemetery.

Assessment

The French are raised on June 27th in the morning. They lose 41 men, 24 wounded and destroy about the same number of Russian tanks (26 by the Tigres, 13 by regimental PAK and 1 by a gunner of the Rigide company and put out of combat several hundreds of soldiers of the Red Army .

According to the author Saint-Wolf, the Russian newspapers would have written on this battle: “(...) on the Bobr river, of the armor-plated units pertaining to the two faces of White Russia ran up against the resistance of two French divisions”, whereas they were hardly 600.
