Battle of Barfleur

The Bataille of Barfleur is a naval battle which opposed the May 29th 1692 to broad of the Cotentin, the navy of French war to the English fleet.

Louis XIV supports one second attempt at Jacques II to take again the capacity in England. A task force is concentrated with Saint-Vaast-the-Hougue, in north Cotentin. A fleet of protection and transport based with Brest must come to Saint-Vaast to embark the troops.

May 12th under the order of Tourville, but without the reinforcement of the squadron of Raising of the admiral Victor Marie d' Estrées, who has delay, Tourville leaves Brest. The admiral is not warned in time that the English fleet is higher to him (99 English ships with 7.100 guns against 44 vaissaux French and 3.100 guns). Louis XIV having, in March, given the order to attack whatever the circumstances, Tourville obeys. After a combat of more than 10 hours, and the night coming, the battle is undecided. However the French fleet gives up projected forwarding and tries to be put at the shelter (see Bataille of Hougue).

The French did not lose any vessel. On the other hand the English deplore the death of the rear-admiral Carter and the loss of two ships.
